The Story Behind Uhuru Experience
In the world of tourism, who knows the culture, landscape and environment better than the locals and the indigenous? Travelling opens a window into others’ lives and allows us to learn more about how our experiences can directly impact communities in their respective areas.
Crafted from an intention to support our network of guides, businesses and grassroots initiatives, we saw an opportunity to support their endeavours by helping them to increase their local economy. This allows them to fund education, water systems, healthcare and thrive in the adaptation to climate change and land privatisation. We specifically choose to work with people who we have built cherished friendships with around the globe and who seek to uplift their villages, families and communities from poverty.
The Uhuru story begins in India back in 2018 when Naomi, the founder, found herself travelling through this destination. On a journey to dive deep into the diversity of the country’s spiritual, religious and historic principles, she decided to stay and live there for two years while she went on a path of spiritual education. The ashram where she devoted almost a year of her time helped her to carve out what she felt was the meaning of life; to be of service to earth and humanity.
Combining her love for travel and the history of diverse cultures, she wanted to share the spiritual and ancient connection people have to their environment and each other. She envisioned travel experiences which would uplift minority communities with a business which could sponsor projects to help the underprivileged and provide financial stability.
‘The Uhuru Experience’ draws its inspiration from the Swahili word ‘Uhuru’, meaning ‘freedom.’ It encapsulates the essence of liberation, not just in a political sense but also in the freedom of exploration, discovery and connection with the world and its rural, wild open wilderness. The concept was born from a vision to provide travellers with the freedom to explore cultures ethically and authentically, breaking barriers to experience a globe of diverse rituals, wildlife encounters and landscape settings without constraints.
The founders envisioned creating a platform with a soul purpose to empower indigenous and minority communities. One which allows individuals to embark on liberating journeys which supports locals. The company seeks to inspire a sense of freedom and adventure in every traveller who chooses to be part of ‘The Uhuru Experience’.

Welcome To Uhuru!
Fly back to our founders time in India where she lived for 2 years and begun using her skills to teach yoga. Naomi sought spiritual refuge in the most ancient re-inhabited city on earth, Varanasi. The holy city where people cremate their loved ones and where pilgrims bathe in the Ganga. Naomi begun reflecting on the cycle of samsara, otherwise known as birth and death. She sought what she now feels is the true meaning of life; 'Spirituality and Selfless Service'. In her mind spirituality consists of only 5 basic principles which we can constantly learn from; Gratitude, Acceptance, Non-Judgment, Compassion and Fearlessness.
Whilst living in Varanasi, one of Naomis students, a local resident and member of the Rotary Club, suggested she meet the Guru of an ashram which he had just been made a trustee for. He took her to meet this guru, to which he explained he needed a yoga instructor for his orphanage. Naomi was offered a place to live and work in exchange for her selfless service to the organisation which had a multitude of projects for people from impoverished backgrounds. This life experience has now proven to be invaluable to Naomi. Whilst working for the foundation, the members became like family to her. Together, they started to create ideas to bring in extra funding for the projects for the underprivileged communities which they sponsor. One of Naomi's ideas happened to be tours and retreats.
Naomi returned home to the UK to visit family just before the Pandemic started. Travel restrictions were set in place and there had been no hope to bring the ideas to life which she had been visualising. The travel industry had been completely brought to its knees. All the while, this idea never left Naomi's mind. Her commitment to stay true to her vision occupied her every thought until she made a pledge to herself to learn more about how she could use her skills to share immersive experiences for other travellers. She used her time to delve into the world of sustainable and ethical travel, explored the realms of ancient culture and the indigenous connection to conservation.
